The back-end refers to everything that communicates between the database and the browser; behind the screen, too be precise. Without back-end, there is no front-end. This has a server to host the website, an application to run the website and a database to store and retain the data. And back-end development takes care of the smooth long-time run. Here, the languages vary as PHP, Ruby, Python, JAVA and such.

They both work more likely as on-screen and off-screen associates and are together called the Full Stack development.
